Karoliina Paatos: Cowboy Girls

Valokuvataiteilija Karoliina Paatos asuu Rovaniemellä ja työskentelee sekä Suomessa että Yhdysvalloissa. Cowboy Girls -näyttelyn valokuvat, videoteos, grafiikat, kirjat sekä muu esineistö ovat viimeisen kahdeksan vuoden työn tulosta Nevadasta, missä Paatos on seurannut kahden tytön kasvua syrjäisellä karjatilalla.

Nyt murrosikäiset tytöt tekevät karjatilan töitä, hoitavat eläimiä, ratsastavat sekä lassoavat, käyvät kotikoulua äitinsä johdolla ja keksivät vapaahetkinä villejä leikkejä vuorten ympäröimässä jokilaaksossa. Viikonloppuisin tytöt kisaavat juniorirodeoissa. Heidän elämänsä on hyvin konkreettisesti kiinni ympäröivässä maassa. Siteet perinteen jatkumoon ovat tiukassa, mutta vain aika näyttää, miten tälle elämäntavalle käy.

”Maa on kallista, täällä jokainen tilallinen on joko miljonääri tai miljoonaveloissa. Sateet ovat olleet viime vuosina niukkoja ja suuryritykset omistavat yhä useamman karjatilan.”

Vasikoita syntyy lumihankeen, tomuun jäävät hyönteisen jalanjäljet, ajomatka lähimpään kauppaan kestää tunteja. Taivas kaartuu rajattomana puuttoman maiseman yllä, valo on lähes sietämättömän kaunista. Kaivokset valtaavat alaa Silver Stateksi nimetyssä Nevadassa: ne käyttävät ja saastuttavat Yhdysvaltojen kaikkein kuivimman osavaltion vähäisiä vesivaroja.

“Vietän pitkiä aikoja kuvaten ja tullen osaksi niiden ihmisten elämää, joita seuraan. Pääsen näin syvemmälle ja lähemmäs, mutta muutun samalla itse ihmisenä ja tekijänä.”

Karoliina Paatos julkaisi kesällä 2016 American Cowboy -valokuvataidekirjan, jonka kustansi The Angry Bat. Kirja voitti Vuoden kaunein kirja 2016 palkinnon Sloveniassa ja on kerännyt kunniamainintoja eri kilpailuissa. Paatos on kuvannut neljäntoista vuoden ajan Suomen suurimmille aikakaus- ja sanomalehdille. Hän on valmistunut Aalto-yliopistosta sekä Arizonan yliopistosta. Paatos voitti Cowboy Girls -kuvillaan Suomen Kuvajournalismikilpailun Kuvaessee-sarjan 2016 ja PDN:n opiskelijasarjan 2015 homorodeokulttuuria käsittelevällä Heroes sarjallaan. Hänen kuviaan on ollut useissa ryhmä- ja yksityisnäyttelyissä, sekä erilaisissa julkaisuissa ympäri maailmaa.

Karoliina Paatos is a photographer and artist living in Rovaniemi who works mainly in Finland and in the USA. For the past eight years she has been following two girls growing up on a remote, family owned cattle ranch in Nevada. Home schooling, helping with ranch chores, riding, roping, and playing mostly by themselves, fills their days. On weekends they compete in junior rodeos.

Calfs are born into the snow, dust is so fine you can see insect tracks. It takes hours to reach a grocery store. Here both people and plants are few and far apart to gather the needs for their sustenance.

“Draught, high land prices and changes happening in the cattle industry are making this lifestyle nearly impossible to continue as it has been. I want to see the change through the lives of these two cowboy girls. My journey continues alongside them into their adulthood.”

Romance and harshness is branded in the visual image of a cowboy. The prevailing idea is still a lonesome twenty-something man moving from one camp to another whereas the artist’s cowboys are two girls growing up into this very masculine world. As Paatos states, “I want to get close to the people I follow. I live long periods of time on the ranches and help with the chores. I don’t become invisible but I became part of their everyday life.”

Karoliina Paatos published her first monograph American Cowboy by The Angry Bat in 2016. It won The Most Beautiful Book of the Year award in Slovenia where it was published and was shortlisted in many book competitions. For the past fourteen years Paatos has been covering subjects all over the world for the biggest magazines and newspapers in Finland. Paatos has graduated from Aalto University’s MA program in Photography and Documentary Film and University of Arizona’s MFA program. Paatos won the The Finnish Association of Photojournalists Photo Essay competition in 2016 and was PDN’s student category winner in 2015 with her series Heroes about the gay rodeo. She frequently exhibits her work in solo and group shows and publications both in Finland and abroad.
