Vienoilla Vesillä, Utuisilla Lainehilla (2025) on matka siihen, mitä emme enää pysähdy näkemään. Arkiset yksityiskohdat muuntuvat unenomaiseen muotoon, kun katse viipyy hieman pidempään. Mikään ei ole täysin uutta, mutta mikään ei enää näytä tutulta.

Menneisyydessä pyhyys eli luonnossa. Pakanallisissa uskomuksissa metsät, järvet ja kivet olivat täynnä henkiä ja viestejä. Eläimet liikkuivat maailmassa sukulaisina, merkityksen ja voiman kantajina. Nykyään etsimme mysteeriä teknologian kautta, samalla kun itse ympäristö on muuttunut näkymättömäksi ja riisutuksi merkityksestä. Ohitamme eläimet kuten ohitamme puut tai kivet, sokeina niiden katseelle, kuuroina niiden tarinoille. Niistä on tullut varjoja maailmassa, jossa kaikki elävä nähdään materiaalina.

Kuvat syntyvät sattuman ja pysähtymisen risteyksessä. Soininen käyttää salamoita, värigeelejä ja pitkiä valotusaikoja siirtääkseen arkisen kohti toismaailmallista. Kuvat eivät ole digitaalisia konstruktioita, vaikka ne usein muistuttavat tekoälyn tuottamaa kuvastoa. Tämä jännite on olennainen: teokset heijastavat sitä, kuinka havaintomme on muovautunut teknologian, näyttöjen ja algoritmien kautta samalla kun suora läsnäolomme maailmassa on heikentynyt. Omien esoteeristen kokemustensa kautta Soininen on oppinut hahmottamaan maailman kerroksellisena, elävänä ja symbolisena. Valokuva toimii keinona kääntää nämä havainnot näkyviksi – tapana paljastaa arkisen sisään kätkeytyvä näkymätön ulottuvuus. Meitä ympäröivä maailma on täynnä piilotettuja tarinoita – merkityksiä, jotka odottavat tulla nähdyiksi.

Sari Soininen (s. 1991, Raisio) on valmistunut valokuvataiteen maisteriksi UWE Bristolista (2021) ja medianomiksi Lahden Muotoiluinstituutista (2014). Soinisen valokuvat ovat herättäneet huomattavaa kiinnostusta kansainvälisesti, ja hänen teoksiaan on esitelty laajasti mm. The Guardianissa, Financial Timesissa and Libérationissa. Hän on osallistunut lukuisiin kansainvälisiin ryhmänäyttelyihin Euroopassa ja Yhdysvalloissa.

Soininen on julkaissut kolme valokuvataidekirjaa: Shallow Waters, Misty Waves (2025), Black Cat Kingdom (Besides Press, 2023) ja Transcendent Country of the Mind (The Eriskay Connection, 2022). Häntä edustaa Suomessa Galleria Heino ja Ranskassa Marie Valat Agency. Hänen viimeisimpiä yksityisnäyttelyitä ovat The Trees Are Not What They Seem (Aboa Vetus Ars Nova, 2025), Transcendent Country of the Mind (Galleria Heino, 2025) ja Katseen takana (Lahden visuaalisten taiteiden museo Malva, 2024).

Shallow Waters, Misty Waves (2025) is a journey into what we no longer stop to see. Everyday details transform into dreamlike visions when the gaze lingers a little longer. Nothing is entirely new, yet nothing looks familiar anymore.

In the past, sacredness lived in nature. In pagan beliefs, forests, lakes, and stones were filled with spirits and messages. Animals moved through the world as kin, bearers of meaning and power. Today, we seek mystery through technology while the environment itself has grown invisible, stripped of meaning. We pass animals as we pass trees or stones, blind to their gaze, deaf to their stories. They have become shadows in a world that treats all life as material.

The images arise from chance and stillness. Soininen uses flashes, color gels, and long exposures to shift the ordinary into something otherworldly. The images are not digital fabrications, though they often resemble AI-generated imagery. This ambiguity is essential: the works mirror how our perception has become shaped by technology, screens, and algorithms, while our direct presence in the world has diminished.

Through her own esoteric experiences, Soininen has learned to perceive the world as layered, alive, and symbolic. Photography becomes a means of translating these perceptions – a way of revealing the unseen dimension within the ordinary. What surrounds us is alive with hidden stories, a secret script inscribed in the fabric of the world, waiting to be read.

Sari Soininen (b. 1991, Raisio, Finland) holds an MA in Photography from University of the West of England (2021) and a BA in Photography from Lahti Institute of Design (2014). Her work has attracted significant international attention and has been featured in publications such as The Guardian, Financial Times, and Libération. She has participated in numerous international group exhibitions across Europe and the United States.

Soininen has published three photobooks: Shallow Waters, Misty Waves (2025), Black Cat Kingdom (Besides Press, 2023), and Transcendent Country of the Mind (The Eriskay Connection, 2022). She is represented by Galleria Heino in Finland and Marie Valat Agency in France. Her recent solo exhibitions include The Trees Are Not What They Seem (Aboa Vetus Ars Nova, 2025), Transcendent Country of the Mind (Galleria Heino, 2025), and Mindscapes (Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva, 2024). Her work has been supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation. The production of the works in this exhibition has been supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland and FinnFoto.
